Ideal curriculums for students who struggle to read will incorporate the use of all four learning styles (visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic).
And the BEST curriculums follow the Orton-Gillingham ("OG") style of teaching which allow all of the senses and learning styles to be engaged during education time. We teach our readers in a way that is explicit, systematic, and cumulative.
Standard reading curriculums will never work for struggling readers. They can't 'just try harder' and it will not 'get easier with age' because they are not being taught in a way that works for how their BRAIN stores information!

Why can't my student learn to read like others? Why do they need a 1-to-1 approach instead of group learning?
Students who struggle learning to read may have trouble due to a large number of factors - ranging from slower processing speeds, phonemic awareness issues, fluency delays, and other ways their little brains may vary. Group learning can reinforce concepts but the fastest way to address the individual child's needs is with the OG curriculum taught at the pace of that child.
No matter the age of the learner, 5 or 15 or 55, when a person is ready, they will benefit the most from tutoring. From start to finish, the standard IMSE-Certified curriculum will take up to 24 months with 45-minute tutoring sessions at least 2 times per week.

Rachel Bailey
OG-Trained Reading Tutor since 2019
Rachel is a trained reading tutor after completing a course at an accredited college, Baker University. She has successfully taught her youngest son to read - as a Kindergartener, her kiddo was a normal 6 year old except that he had no ability to memorize any letter shapes and struggled with almost all phoneme sounds. He was quickly diagnosed with Dyslexia - trouble related to reading (as well as Dysgraphia - trouble related to writing).
Using the IMSE-approved tutoring curriculum, they saw a sudden break through with her youngest son - within 26 lessons, teaching the 26 phonemes (letters), her son suddenly knew all of his letters, their sounds, and how to write each of them! Within one year, he was able to write/read CVC words and within two years he was reading on-grade level. He is now a 5th grader and has the highest state-testing scores for reading and fluency.
A bit more about your educator. Rachel has been married for over 20 years to her husband, Gabe, and they have four kids. Misconceptions and what people say who don't understand Dyslexia...
"They just need more practice" or "Maybe they aren't trying hard" or "They seem to have difficulty with decoding and need extra work" ...and so on.
Dyslexia is a neurological condition. I can guarantee you that your student is trying harder than the rest of us who do not struggle! Reading challenges are not a result of laziness, lack of intelligence, or effort. Their brain truly works differently and in specialized ways! ...and they are amazing kids who just happen to struggle with words.
Early identification and intervention can make a huge difference. If you notice that a child consistently struggles with reading, writing, or spelling despite practicing and receiving instruction, it's not about you! The kiddo just needs the right support — such as phonics-based reading programs, multisensory teaching methods, and appropriate accommodations. Children with dyslexia and other brain-based differences CAN learn to read and excel in ways that work best for them.

There are so many good things to know...
*Your child is VERY smart. Just like someone who is deaf and their other senses work better when they struggle to see. It's very likely your kid has 'off the chart' skills in other areas. They just need a little help with learning to read in a way that helps their brain will retain the info.
